Photorejuvenation Procedures

Photorejuvenation (commonly referred to as IPL Photofacial) treatment is used to reduce excess reds and browns in the skin, including “broken” blood vessels, sun spots, age spots, background redness, and to minimize the effects of rosacea, and other skin imperfections caused by aging and the sun’s UV rays.  This procedure also helps reduce the appearance of fine lines and enlarged pores.  We can either treat the entire face or target specific problem areas.

Our BBL Photorejuvenation Technology Versus Traditional IPL Systems

In our office, the procedure is performed with a dual-light flash lamp that delivers a wide range of Broadband Light (BBL) wavelengths, a more advanced form of traditional intense pulsed light (IPL) systems that have only one flash lamp.  This provides more effective treatment in less time.

How Does BBL Photorejuvenation Work?

Photorejuvenation works by emitting multiple wavelengths of light into the skin, which is then absorbed by the melanin (in pigmented lesions and hair follicles) and hemoglobin (in blood vessels) as heat, thus destroying the targeted lesion.  This effect targets the pigmentation in the skin tone (sun spots, redness).  The Photorejuvenation process also gently heats cells known as fibroblasts in the deeper layer of the skin, which produce more collagen as a reaction to the light, in turn improving the texture of the skin and reducing fine lines, wrinkles, and pore size.

What Can I Expect During and After Photorejuvenation?

Depending on the size of the treatment area, a BBL photo facial session can take 15 to 45 minutes.

The treatment is gentle and non-invasive, with little to no recovery time needed, and clients can return to their daily routines immediately. During the procedure, a small handpiece with a flat tip is lightly placed on the skin, which delivers the pulsed light energy and a sensation of heat.  You may experience a slight stinging/burning sensation. However, photorejuvenation is well-tolerated as the BBL’s built-in cooling system minimizes any discomfort.

There may be some redness after treatment, which resolves within a few hours to a couple of days post-procedure. Initially, the dark spots being treated may appear darker and crust, but will gradually resolve within a few days. For optimal results, 3 to 5 treatments are scheduled one month apart from each other. This procedure does not halt the skin’s aging process, so maintenance visits may be required to continue results. The cost of a photorejuvenation treatment will vary based on the targeted concerns and treatment areas.

Is IPL Photorejuvenation Right For You?

The best method for determining whether intense pulsed light photorejuvenation is right for you is to meet with a member of our cosmetic team for a thorough assessment and discussion of your skincare concerns. Here at Schaumburg Dermatology, we understand no two individuals are alike, so this initial conversation is an important one to set you up on the correct cosmetic path that is right for you.
